Drill now, shoot 3D seismic first, or farm out?

Compare the ways to explore the block on the same inputs. Buying 3D seismic first has the highest expected value, $40.0M against $34.3M for drilling straight away: better information is worth paying for before you commit.

How much can we really recover?

Carry subsurface uncertainty through to the volumes you book. In the Falcon example the P90 is 22.7 MMboe and the P10 66.5. Multiplying all the low inputs gives 11.8 MMboe, a case only 0.2% of futures fall below.

Which development concept?

Choose between a tieback, a standalone FPSO, or a tieback with the option to expand, with reserves and price uncertainty built in. The tieback with the option to expand has the highest expected value.

FAQ

Common questions

What do P90, P50 and P10 mean for reserves?

In petroleum resource reporting P90 is the low estimate: the volume with a 90% chance of being exceeded. P10 is the high estimate. Multiplying low inputs together does not give the P90: in the free Falcon example the all-low case is 11.8 MMboe, while the simulated P90 is 22.7 MMboe.

Can ModelRisk value a prospect with its chance of failure?

Yes. The free prospect example combines the geological chance of success with the development cash flow. Its expected value of drilling is $40.4M, even though the well loses money in about 80% of futures.

Which schedules can Tamara read?

Primavera P6, Microsoft Project and Microsoft Planner Premium. Tamara adds the duration uncertainty and risk events and shows the range of dates and the activities that drive them.

Can we try it on one of our own fields?

Yes. ModelRisk, ModelChoice and Tamara each have a free 15-day trial, and our team can go through one of your own models with you.

Bring one field model. We'll show you the range.
