Choosing the right licences

Desktop or network licence

  • Desktop licences: the software is installed on an individual’s computer.
  • Network licences: the software is shared across your company. The number of seats you purchase determines how many people can use the software at the same time, so while many people can have access, only a limited number can be active concurrently. As a general rule, one seat typically supports 3–4 average users, depending on usage patterns.

Network licences are a popular choice for IT teams because they’re easier to manage and don’t require individual installations or activations for each user.

Two ways to set up a network licence

  • Classic network licence (no internet access required): ideal for closed or isolated systems. A dedicated network share stores all licence files, no internet connection is required, and everything stays within your internal network.
  • Cloud-based network licence (recommended): user workstations connect to a secure licence endpoint via the internet. It’s secure, simple to configure and works well in environments with internet access.

Both options are priced the same, so you can choose the one that best fits your infrastructure and security requirements.

Mix licence types

If your organisation is likely to have some users who use the software very often and others rarely, it is most cost-effective to purchase a mixture of licence types: desktop for the frequent user, network for the occasional user.

Start small with network seats

If you are considering a network licence, it is better to start with a smaller number of seats and add more when you find people are waiting too often. We can very quickly increase the seat number and align billing, so you still have the one annual invoice.

Academic users

Professors, researchers, students and departments have their own discounted licences. See the academic prices for ModelRisk and Tamara.

Apple Mac users

ModelRisk, Tamara and ModelChoice do not run on Mac OS or Parallels, but can be run on an Intel-based Mac using Boot Camp.
