Online training course: Business Risk for small and medium sized companies

No doubt you’ve been following the news lately and probably share our sinking feeling that we are at the beginning of another financial crisis. The Eurozone growth has come to a standstill, Italy’s financial predicament has displaced Greece to a sideshow, and even Christine Lagarde - the head of the IMF - has started talking about a potential 'lost decade' of economic growth and said in China last week “the economy around the world runs the risk of downward spiral of uncertainty, financial instability and potential collapse of global demand". We are already seeing worldwide that markets are exhibiting extraordinary volatile reflecting a general uncertainty about our future.

The question we are all having to ask ourselves is “what are we going to do to get thru this?” You might start with cutting costs but that will only get you so far. Holding off making new investments might seem like a good idea too, but then you’ll be in a poor position when this new crisis ends.

The key to survival is going to be to manage your risks and, to do that well, you’ll need to understand those risks as accurately as possible. For many businesses your management need better information than ‘possible’ or ‘unlikely’, they need to get a feel for the numbers – probabilities and possible impacts.

Try a little test for yourself. Does your organization:

  • incorporate uncertainty in your cashflow forecasts?
  • account for unexpected events?
  • appreciate how much exposure you have to correlated variables like commodity prices, exchange rates and energy cost (it’s an uncomfortable truth that in times of stress, the things you count on tend to work together against you)?
  • have a comprehensive, well-used and well-maintained risk register?
  • have an efficient risk management plan that you have real faith in?

If your answers to any of these questions is ‘no’, you should be taking a good hard look at how to implement risk analysis within your company. It doesn’t need to be expensive, it can be quick to implement, and learning the basics is not that hard either.
